Widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in history, Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 total medals, 18 of them gold.  Phelps became the first American male swimmer to qualify for four Olympic Games and his career is highlighted by the greatest individual performance in Olympic history when he won eight gold medals and set seven world records at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The most accomplished swimmer in World Championships history, Phelps holds the most career world records of all time.

At age 15, Phelps became the youngest male world record holder in history and, at 16, the youngest American male swimmer to turn pro.  He continues to promote swimming and is involved in projects to help grow the game.  He launched the Michael Phelps Swim School in 2009 and developed a learn-to-swim program that builds comfort and confidence in the water.  He also used his $1 million bonus for his performance in Beijing to create the Michael Phelps Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthy and active lifestyles, especially for children.
