Mike Allen was the common link between the group as he was the one who introduced Zast, Johnson and Thompson to each other. For over 20 years the foursome played golf every Saturday. Allen died when he was 64.
A victim of juvenile diabetes, Allen’s behavior was as unpredictable away from the golf course as on it. Nevertheless, he managed somehow to stay married to the same woman for nearly 40 years.
To make the trip with his friends, his wife lifted his urn out of a corner in her living room closet where it had been gathering dust.
Allen was a colleague of Thompson’s at the Leo Burnett Co. He left behind two children, a daughter and a son and two grandchildren.
Mike died with a 22-handicap, adding 10 strokes to his index in the last three years of his life.
