Piri (pronounced “Petey”) Borja is proud of his athletic Heritage – his father, Chico Borja, is a nationally recognized soccer player and captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Soccer Team. Piri wanted to be just like his father growing up. “I wanted to live the life of a professional athlete like my dad,” said Piri.
Golf did not enter the equation until high school, when he decided to compete on his high school squad while living in Houston. He then had a tough decision to make.
“I told my father I wanted to focus on golf, as I felt that had more potential there than soccer,” said Piri. “My dad was extremely supportive of my decision.”
Piri continued to excel in golf at a breathtaking pace. When he took up golf in high school, he couldn’t break 120. By his junior year, he was a scratch golfer, consistently breaking par. He always knew he wanted to be a professional athlete. He just didn’t realize it would be golf.
He earned a scholarship to Barry University and was part of the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship Team. After graduation, he turned professional, and has competed on the mini-tour circuit ever since. He realizes it is an emotional and physical grind to make ends meet, but he doesn’t let that deter him.
“I know this is what I want to do with the rest of my life, and I am going exhaust all of my energy to succeed,” said Piri.
Big Break Indian Wells could just be his springboard to success.
