NORTH BERWICK, Scotland - Chris Wood and Matt Fitzpatrick were both eliminated from the Paul Lawrie Match Play on Friday, leaving their chances of competing for Europe at the Ryder Cup in the balance.
Top-seeded Wood lost 2 and 1 to Daniel Brooks in the Round of 32, before Fitzpatrick was beaten 4 and 3 by Alejandro Canizares in the sweet 16.
The Englishmen currently occupy two of the final slots in Darren Clarke's European team going into the last month of qualifying. Wood would have sealed his place at Hazeltine by winning the title at Archerfield in eastern Scotland.
The 21-year-old Fitzpatrick didn't drop a shot in his opening two wins - 4 and 3 against Thomas Bjorn on Thursday, and 6 and 5 over Matt Ford in the Round of 32 - and only had one bogey against Canizares, who made seven birdies in 15 holes.
James Morrison may be the man to beat heading into the quarterfinals: None of his three matches have reached the 16th hole. He had 4-and-3 wins over Graeme Storm and Michael Hoey on Friday.
Also in the quarterfinals are Haydn Porteous of South Africa, Johan Carlsson of Sweden and Oliver Fisher of England.
Tournament host Paul Lawrie was eliminated in the Round of 32 by Richard Green on the 19th hole.
