THE RULES YOU SET UP
In talking to many players we quickly discover that they are trying to play the game well while under an incredible set of rules that make it very, very difficult to be successful under. Its a very subtle thing and unless we stop to see what our own rules are; the rules will continue to run the show causing inconsistency and frustration. Here is an example taken from an actual client. His name is Peter. When I asked Peter what his expectation was he said, To go out and play my best and have fun. Unfortunately, this was not what Peter was doing. While this answer might seem to be a good one, I reminded Peter of the first performance law which states, The more honest you are with yourself; the quicker you shift toward what you want. I then said, Peter, you just gave me the textbook answer. Its the answer that most people offer because it sounds good but your experience on the golf course is anything but this. Now I want to know the real truth about what your expectations are when you play golf. Peter stared at me for a moment and then began to chuckle. Well, if you want to know what I really expect Yes, thats exactly what I want to know. You know the first performance principle so lets get down to the truth here. Ok. Peter said. Here is what he came up with:
Now we have something to work with. Once we identify the truth about his expectations versus the book answer it becomes very clear that Peter has set up his own rules that make it very difficult to enjoy the game and also make it difficult to play it to his best capabilities. Basically, his mission was to play great golf and he made it more impossible to achieve because of his expectations. These rules caused him to experience:
What about your expectations? See if you can look beyond the stock answer. Everyone wants to play their best. The real question is...Whats the expectation lurking beneath that? Answer that and you can turn an impossible mission into one that is POSSIBLE!
