A local resident captured the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday, but it wasn't Masters champion Jordan Spieth or Jimmy Walker. Australian Steven Bowditch, who lives in Dallas and was married at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas, fired a final-round 64 to win his second PGA Tour title. Here's the lowdown from the Lone Star State.
Leaderboard: Steven Bowditch (-18), Charley Hoffman (-14), Jimmy Walker (-14), Scott Pinckney (-14), Zach Johnson (-13), Brandt Snedeker (-12), Jon Curran (-12)
What it means: Bowditch won his first title last year at the Texas Open, and he added another Texas title Sunday at the Nelson with four back-nine birdies to win by four. After a second at the Frys.com Open in October, Bowditch's season has been rocky with nine missed cuts in 18 starts, and he was coming off a DQ at Colonial. But Bowditch joined fellow Aussies Adam Scott and Jason Day as Nelson champions with six birdies and two bogeys in the final round in what had to be an extra-special victory since Bowditch and wife Amanda had their wedding pictures taken on the 18th green. On Sunday, they met again on 18 with Bowditch crusing to victory.
Round of the day: Zach Johnson and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano each shot 6-under 63s. For Johnson it moved him up to fifth place, and it was his fifth top-10 in 15 events.
Best of the rest: Already with a win this season at Mayakoba, and a top-10 at the Masters, Charley Hoffman made five back-nine birdies to grab a share of second place with Jimmy Walker and Scott Pinckney.
Biggest disappointment: Dustin Johnson started his round with chip-in birdies on Nos. 1 and 3, but he imploded at the par-4 6th when his drive sailed way right and out of bounds. He re-teed and found the thick grass left of the fairway. He went on to make a snowman and never got back in contention.
Quote of the day: "It's a special place, and now I get to take some more pictures here." - Bowditch
