CARMEL, Ind. – Rickie Fowler needed to beat only a few players this week to clinch his spot at the season-ending Tour Championship.
It’s a little closer than he would have wanted.
Fowler is in a tie for 63rd in the 69-man field after two rounds at Crooked Stick. He’s currently projected at No. 30 in the FedEx Cup – just five points ahead of No. 31 Fabian Gomez.
The top 30 players after this week advance to East Lake.
“I knew going in that it was close to a lock, but obviously I wanted to come here and play well – I didn’t want to sneak in,” said Fowler, who is at 2-over 146. “I just didn’t get off to the start that I wanted to (Thursday). I definitely put myself behind the 8-ball.”
Fowler had the 54-hole lead at the playoff-opening Barclays, but he hasn’t played great golf since. He closed with 74 and then didn’t factor at TPC Boston, where he tied for 46th. Now he is 16 shots off the pace after 36 holes.
“Obviously I want to be at East Lake,” he said. “I know that I don’t have to finish that high. So I’m just trying to play well for myself, really. Make myself feel better about my game right now. I know it’s so close to being really good. That’s what’s really unfortunate, because it’s such a fine line.”
