HARRISON, N.Y. – The Europeans are looking to build some momentum with the Solheim Cup just around the corner.
Sandra Gal took notice two weeks ago when Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist broke a 14-month victory drought for the Europeans in LPGA events. She did again last week when Norway’s Suzann Pettersen made it two in a row.
With a 3-under-par 70 Thursday, Gal is in early position to make a run three in a row for the Euros.
“I was very happy to see Anna and Suzann win,” Gal said. “I think it breeds confidence in every one of us.”
As a German, Gal has a special stake in trying to make the Solheim Cup team for the second time. She helped the Euros win in 2011 in Ireland. This year’s Solheim Cup is scheduled Sept. 18-20 at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club outside Heidelberg, Germany.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me to get to play a Solheim Cup in Germany,” Gal said. “It’s just very, very exciting to be, hopefully, a part of that. I think the Germans are going to put on a very good show and Germans are going to be very involved in it.”
Gal is fourth on the European Rolex world rankings list. The top four on Aug. 23 will qualify for the European team along with the top four on the European points list. Four captain’s picks also will make it.
