PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Relative to the world rankings, the strength of the field for this week’s Valspar Championship has slowly been trending in the wrong direction the last few years.
When Luke Donald won in 2012, he received 58 ranking points, compared to 52 for ‘13 champion Kevin Streelman and 50 for last year’s winner, John Senden.
That trend, however, will stop this year with the addition of some of the game’s top players.
Five of the top-10 players in the Official World Ranking are playing this week at Innisbrook, including No. 3 Henrik Stenson, No. 4 Adam Scott, No. 6 Jim Furyk, No. 9 Justin Rose and No. 10 Jordan Spieth.
Rose, who was seventh at this time last year, was the only top-10 player in the 2014 Valspar Championship field. For Stenson and No. 28 Lee Westwood, this is their first start at Innisbrook.
“Everybody raves about the golf course and it fit in well with my schedule,” Westwood said.
