Overnight leader Emiliano Grillo put together a bogey-free 3-under 67 and will take a two-shot lead into the final round at the Web.com Tour Championship, where he’s battling Chez Reavie for the No. 1 priority ranking amongst Web.com Finals graduates next year on Tour. Here’s how things shape up with one round to go at TPC Sawgrass’ Valley Course:
Leaderboard: Grillo (-13), Reavie (-11), Lucas Glover (-10), Sam Saunders (-9)
What it means: Grillo entered the week fifth in Finals earnings and is currently projected second, behind Reavie. The 23-year-old Argentine has spent much of his career on the European Tour and is likely best known to American fans for his performance at this year’s Puerto Rico Open, played opposite the WGC-Cadillac at Doral. Grillo held a one-shot lead with one hole to play before bogeying the 72nd hole. A par would have locked up his Tour card months ago. Chasing Grillo are Reavie, who currently possesses the No. 1 priority ranking, Glover, who won the 2009 U.S. Open, and Saunders, who’s looking to make his own name beyond being Arnold Palmer’s grandson.
Round of the day: Luke Guthrie and first-round leader Rhein Gibson both turned in 5-under 65s. Gibson, who opened with a week-low 63, would be in contention for the win this week if not for a second-round 76. Guthrie started the week 95th in Finals earnings and has worked himself up to T-32 with one round to play.
Best of the rest: Five players - Tyrone Van Aswegen, Andres Romero, Patton Kizzire, Henrik Norlander, and Jamie Lovemark - shot 4-under 66. Kizzire, Norlander and Lovemark have all secured their cards. Romero, exactly like Guthrie, is up to a tie for 32nd in earnings from 95th. Van Aswegen is projected 15th from 44th.
Biggest disappointment: Steven Alker started the week 35th and looked in position to make a move into the top 25 after a 67-68 start, but a Saturday 74 has him currently projected 39th.
Shot of the day: After narrowly avoiding the water at 18, Greg Eason chipped in for birdie to finish off a round of even-par 70.
Eason, who entered the week 46th, is currently projected 24th.
Storyline to watch Sunday: The top 25 players in earnings at the end of the Web.com Tour Finals earn their PGA Tour cards. The higher a player’s finish, the higher his priority ranking for next season. Sunday means one more chance for a player to dictate where he’ll play next year.
