David Howell has been named the fifth and final member of the panel that will select the 2016 European Ryder Cup captain.
A decision on the next captain – Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenez are the favorites – will be made in the “early part of 2015,” according to a European Tour release.
Nominated by the European Tour tournament committee, Howell, 39, was a two-time Ryder Cup team member (2004, ’06), totaling a 3-1-1 record in a pair of European victories.
The other members of the five-man panel are the last three European Ryder Cup captains (Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Paul McGinley) and European Tour chief executive George O’Grady.
The PGA of America seems poised to follow Europe’s lead. It was reported Tuesday that the PGA is currently in the process of creating a similar task force to determine everything from how the U.S. captains are selected to how the 12-man roster is comprised.
