PHOENIX – Juli Inkster isn’t relevant this week just because it’s a Solheim Cup year.
The American captain was doing more than scouting Thursday at the Bank of Hope Founders Cup. She shot a 7-under-par 65 to move one shot off the lead.
At 56, Inkster is in early position to try to pull off a historic sweep. She won an LPGA Legends Tour event just 10 days ago.
“I played really well,” Inkster said. “Drove the ball well and putted good and had a lot of great iron shots. I only missed two greens, and those I putted. Real solid day for me.”
This is Inkster’s 35th year in the LPGA. She’s an LPGA Hall of Famer with 31 tour titles, including seven major championships. She is 10 years older than the oldest player to win an LPGA title.
“I’ve been working hard on my game and it’s nice to see some results,” Inkster said.
Inkster loved more than seeing her name on the leaderboard. She loved seeing all the red, white and blue on the board. Seven of the top nine are Americans.
“Got a lot of great girls out there playing well,” Inkster said.
