NAPLES, Fla. – Ha Na Jang nearly opened her rookie year in spectacular fashion.
She nearly won the LPGA’s season opener, coming up one shot short as Na Yeon Choi beat her and Lydia Ko down the stretch at the Coates Golf Championship in the season opener.
Though Jang is No. 15 in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings and enjoying a good start to her LPGA career, a first victory has proved elusive. She has finished second three times this season, including a playoff loss to Chella Choi at the Marathon Classic in July.
Jang is in position to remedy that at the CME Group Tour Championship after taking the second-round lead Friday with a 7-under-par 65. She’s two shots ahead of Lydia Ko (67).
“I think too much, I want to be a champion,” Jang said after Friday’s round. “I don’t want to think about it.”
Jang was the Korean LPGA Player of the Year and leading money winner in 2013. She was among a wave of talented South Koreans who came through LPGA Q-School late last year. She tied for sixth at Q-School.
