On a soggy but eventually sunny day at Colonial, Chris Kirk took advantage of lift, clean and place rules, turned in a final-round 66, and won the Crowne Plaza Invitational by one.
Leaderboard: Kirk (-12), Jordan Spieth (-11), Brandt Snedeker (-11), Jason Bohn (-11)
What it means: This is Kirk’s fourth PGA Tour victory and his first since the Deutsche Bank Championship in the FedEx Cup playoffs last September. Kirk was the 54-hole leader at The Players two weeks ago but struggled to a Sunday 75. Three back to start the final round at Colonial, he opened with an eagle and made three more birdies against a lone bogey. After hooking his tee shot far left off the 18th tee, he recovered to make a 5-footer for par to win the tournament and avoid what would have been a four-way playoff. Kirk has won three times in the last two seasons and will now jump into the top 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Round of the day: Jason Bohn poured in six consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-7 to make the turn in 29. Although he cooled off on the back with a 1-under 34, his closing 63 was good enough to advance him from 22nd overnight to a tie for second. This is his eighth career runner-up finish on Tour and his second this season.
Best of the rest: Jordan Spieth made a birdie putt on the 18th green to get to 11 under and Brandt Snedeker missed one on 18 to stay at 11 under. Playing alongside Kirk, Snedeker played a shot from the left trees and over the left pond that settled 12 feet from the pin, but his birdie try to get to 12 under just slid by.
Biggest disappointment: The entire final group goes here. As the rest of the field took advantage of the conditions and the preferred lies, Kevin Na, Ian Poulter and Charley Hoffman combined to play the final round 2 over. None of them broke par.
Shot of the day: Playing with Spieth, Jerry Kelly hit his approach to the final green 13 inches from the hole. After the hometown favorite Spieth holed his lengthy birdie putt to put himself in position for a potential playoff, Kelly got a rousing ovation for tapping in - just for good measure.
Quote of the day: "I was as nervous as I’ve ever been today, for sure. Those up-and-downs on the last two holes, and especially making the putt on 18, is pretty sweet." - Kirk
