PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Davis Love III was clearly the players’ choice to captain the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team, that much was clear from Tuesday’s news conference.
“He’s a guy that people love and respect, and he’s a guy that already has done a great job and put us in position to succeed,” said Phil Mickelson, a member of the task force that nominated Love for his second term as captain.
Love wasn’t as sure.
He confirmed to GolfChannel.com that when the 11-member task force initially voted on the next captain in December he voted for someone else, although he declined to say who.
During the second, official vote, which was taken earlier this month in San Diego, Love said he recused himself from the vote. PGA chief executive Pete Bevacqua said the second vote was unanimous for Love.
“It was so awkward . . . but in a good way,” Love said.
