PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Rory McIlroy thumped his putter on the concrete before heading into the scoring area after a difficult first round Thursday at the Honda Classic.
That pretty much summed up McIlroy’s day.
McIlroy three-putted from 10 feet at the last, missing a 2½ footer for par, to close out a 2-over-par 72. He’s tied for 65th. None of McIlroy’s 11 PGA Tour wins have come after he opened with a round over par. His tough day comes on the heels of his 75 closing out at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, where he had a chance to win going into Sunday. He won the Honda Classic in 2012.
McIlroy, No. 3 in the world, drove the ball well Thursday at PGA National, hitting 10 of 14 fairways, but he hit just 11 greens in regulation. He took 31 putts, missing five putts inside 10 feet.
