Colin Montgomerie will be one of three former European Ryder Cup captains who will help select the skipper for 2016, and he's thrown out a few names that he will have his eye on.
According to Golf Monthly, Monty hinted at five nominees who could possibly lead the three-time defending champions in two years at Hazeltine.
“I think there are five main candidates: Thomas Bjorn, Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jiminez and Darren Clarke,” he said.
Clarke is the likely favorite, and he has already received support from world No. 1 Rory McIlroy and Westwood.
Harrington already withdrew his name from consideration and will likely be one of the favorite to captain in 2018, along with Bjorn.
Westwood will no doubt be a captain in the future, and he will also likely be an assistant in 2016 if he doesn't make the team.
Jimenez, who has already been an assistant captain, would be wildly popular captain, but it would be hard to give him the nod after two of Europe's most prominent players have thrown their support behind Clarke.
