AUGUSTA, Ga. – Arnold Palmer announced last month that he would be unable to hit the ceremonial opening tee shot on Thursday at the Masters as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury.
Instead, it will be Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player teeing off on the first tee early Thursday to begin the year’s first major.
Player, who joined Nicklaus and Palmer on the first tee in 2012, said Thursday’s ceremony will be different without Palmer’s participation but the South African had something special planned.
“I have a philosophy in life that everything will pass. Legacies are forgotten, and understandably so,” Player said. “I look at Arnold and had a great friendship with him. I love him as a friend and am going to dedicate my shot to Arnold.”
Palmer, 86, still plans to attend the Masters and the Champions Dinner.
