CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Hitting eight of 14 fairways normally isn’t a reason to celebrate, but after a few difficult few weeks off the tee Patrick Reed was thrilled with the effort.
“Even though I only hit eight fairways to me that seems like a lot,” said Reed, who opened with a 6-under 66 and was one stroke off the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Reed said he’s been having a hard time drawing the ball with his driver, as evidenced by last week’s performance at The Players where he ranked 72nd in fairways hit.
“I really don’t understand why the driver is so difficult for me to turn right now because my irons are easy to turn,” said Reed, who did find 11 of 18 greens in regulation and needed only 24 putts.
On Thursday, however, Reed said he started to feel more comfortable from the tee and other than bogeys at the first and 17th holes he was relatively flawless.
