HONOLULU – Adam Scott opened with a 3-under 67 at the Sony Open on Thursday – no thanks to caddie Steve Williams.
That’s because Williams is on vacation this week, his job being filled by pro surfer Benji Weatherley, who met Scott through mutual friend and fellow surfer Kelly Slater a few years ago.
“He’s bogey-free so far,” Scott said with laugh after a round that included three birdies and 15 pars.
“He did great today getting around in that group. I’m so pleased that he stuck with it and came out. It’s a little intense when you’re not a professional caddie to caddie on the PGA Tour and be around a couple of other world-class players. But he plays golf, so he gets it.”
Said Weatherley: "It's cool that he was my guy. If you're going to caddie, you might as well caddie for the best guy."
As for whether his new caddie is equipped to handle the rigors of competing in the heat of a title contention, Scott maintained, “He’s been schooled for the last week-and-a-half, so I think he’s pretty well-prepared.”
