PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Webb Simpson withdrew earlier this week from the Players Championship, but it turned out the former major winner had a good reason for skipping one of the season’s biggest events.
Simpson stayed at home in Charlotte, N.C., to be with his wife, Dowd, as she gave birth to the couple’s fourth child. Their daughter, Mercy, was born on Tuesday, joining a Simpson family that also includes son James and daughters Willow and Wyndham.
Simpson, 30, missed the cut last week at the Wells Fargo Championship in his hometown event. He remains in search of his first top-10 finish this season and is currently ranked 90th in the world.
Simpson was replaced in the 144-man field by Australian Aaron Baddeley; Lucas Glover is now the tournament’s first alternate.
