Jordan Spieth avoided the big numbers during his third round at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, and as a result he is on the fringe of contention heading into the final round.
Spieth carded a 3-under 67 amid soggy conditions at Colonial Country Club to post a 54-hole total of 6 under. That put him among a tie for 10th, four shots behind co-leaders Kevin Na and Ian Poulter, upon the conclusion of his round.
Spieth's second round was derailed by a triple bogey on No. 5, and the 21-year-old played his final six holes in 5 over after a promising start to the tournament. He had no such issues during the third round, carding six birdies against three bogeys.
Spieth opened with two birdies across his first three holes, and he reached as high as fourth place after making the turn in 32. He never got lower than 7 under, though, closing with a bogey after missing a 7-foot par putt on No. 8.
Spieth had plenty of support from the Texas crowds, and he remains at home amid the cozy confines of Colonial. He has cracked the top 15 in each of his first two appearances at this event, and he will begin the final round within striking distance at an event where the last six winners have come from behind on the final day.
