Amid ideal scoring conditions, the low scores came pouring in Thursday at the Travelers Championship. Here's how things stand at TPC River Highlands, where a former champion leads by two shots:
Leaderboard: Bubba Watson (-8), Keegan Bradley (-6), Harris English (-6), Seung-Yul Noh (-6), Brian Stuard (-6), Jason Gore (-6), Zach Johnson (-5)
What it means: Watson is no stranger to TPC River Highlands, having notched his first win here back in 2010, and he again surged to the top of the standings with an opening 62. That left him two shots clear of a group that includes Bradley, a New England native who seeks his first win in nearly three years.
Round of the day: Watson started slowly but made eight birdies across his final 13 holes, including four circles over his final five holes. Watson needed only 26 putts to complete his round and capped it with a near hole-out on No. 18, hitting his approach to within a foot.
Best of the rest: Bradley hasn't won since the 2012 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, but he moved into position to possibly end that drought after an opening 64. Bradley carded seven birdies against one bogey to produce his lowest score of the season and his lowest career round at TPC River Highlands.
Biggest disappointment: Playing alongside Watson, former Travelers champion Hunter Mahan fell well off the pace. Mahan played his first five holes in 4 over en route to a 2-over 72. Despite a quartet of birdies, Mahan now sits 10 shots off the pace and in danger of missing the cut at this event for the second straight year.
Main storyline heading into Friday: The scores will remain low throughout the weekend, but all eyes will be on Watson as he looks to win his second Travelers title and second event of the season. After a stellar start to the year, Watson has cooled in recent weeks but appears primed to get back on track at one of his favorite venues.
Shot of the day: Watson had only 139 yards into the 18th hole, but he hit his approach to 4 inches, setting up a tap-in birdie to close out the day's best round.
Quote of the day: "After last week, putting on these greens just seems easy." - Bradley
