A week after Martin Kaymer dominated at Pinehurst to win the U.S. Open, Michelle Wie won a nail-biter for her first major at the U.S. Women's Open. Here's the wrap on the LPGA's second major of the season.
Leaderboard: Michelle Wie (-2); Stacy Lewis (E); Stephanie Meadow (+1); Amy Yang (+3); So Yeon Ryu (+3); Meena Lee (+3)
What it means: Wie had a comfy three-shot lead with three holes to go, but a poor decision to hit a hybrid from a fairway bunker on the par-4 16th lead to a double bogey. But Wie made a clutch birdie on the par-3 17th to secure her major breakthrough and second win of the season.
Round of the day: Lewis (66) was the only player to make a run at the lead on Sunday, and the world No. 1 nearly pulled off an incredible comeback. Lewis birdied Nos. 17 and 18 to finish at even par, but it wasn't enough to catch Wie.
Best of the rest: In her first LPGA start Meadow made one heck of a debut. She finished solo third to earn more than $271,000 and will likely secure her LPGA card.
Biggest disappointment: For the second day in a row, Kraft Nabisco winner Lexi Thompson failed to make a move. She struggled to a 74 on Saturday, and only managed a 1-over 71 in the final round.
Quote of the day: "Oh my God, I can't believe this is happening." - Michelle Wie
