BRADENTON, Fla. – A week of firsts continued Monday at the NCAA Women’s Championship when coaches from the top eight teams that qualified for the match play portion of the event sat in a room and manipulated their lineup to match their opponents.
Think Presidents Cup style. One coach throws out a name for Match 1 and the opposing coach selects a candidate. The higher-seeded team earned the option of going first or deferring to the opponent.
Duke coach Dan Brooks and USC coach Andrea Gasto, coaches who have combined for nine NCAA Championships over the past 16 seasons, both threw out a player first and did not defer. Brooks put out freshman Lisa Maguire – the Blue Devils fifth player, who has struggled for most of the week here at Concession Golf Club – and Gaston opted to go with sophomore Karen Chung first.
Baylor and Washington both used a similar strategy, one that often is questionable in a team match play format. Both saved the players that have played the best this week (Dylan Kim for Baylor, Charlotte Thomas for Washington) for the last position in the lineup, meaning it’s possible that the matches could be finalized before their point counts. Think Tiger Woods at the 2012 Ryder Cup.
