With his tie for sixth at the 3M Championship last week, Roberts extended his lead to 282 points over Haas. That is the real struggle in the season-long points race, with the Roberts-Haas duo almost 700 points ahead of third-place Brad Bryant.
Roberts has finished in the top 10 in 14 of the 15 events he has participated in this season. In seven of the 15, he has finished in a tie for third or higher.
Haas has also been quite sharp this season. He has played in only 13 Champions Tour events, but has finished in the top 10 in nine of those. Haas has finished in the top three six times.
Roberts, Haas and Bryant are all idle this week, opening the door for No. 4 Gil Morgan to make up ground. Morgan is only 34 points behind Bryant at 1,433 and 702 points out of second place.
Morgan is somewhat of an anomaly since he is now 59 years old.
Last year, I kind of was in and out, he said. I didn't have a win. I made a few changes. I had a few physical problems that keep plaguing me from time to time, so hopefully this year I'm in a little better shape.
I still haven't played up to what I would like to play to date. But at the same time I think that the aging process has probably taken its toll somewhat. I'll be 60 in September, so from that standpoint I think my game's over the top of the hump anyway, and I just hope it doesn't go down the hill too fast.
Last years champion, David Eger, has had a rather difficult time this year. He hasnt come close to a victory this year and has only one top-5 finish ' a tie for fifth at the Toshiba Classic. He finished in a tie for 14th last week, however, his best finish since the Toshiba.
The Golf Channel will televise all three rounds beginning Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
