South African Leader Named Honorary Presidents Cup Chairman
Mbeki's home country will host the 2002 Presidents Cup Matches, which pit a team form the United States against a team comprised of international players not born in Europe.
The team competition will be held on the Links Course at the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in George, South Africa in November of 2002.
'We are honored that President Mbeki has accepted our invitation to be Honorary Chairman of The Presidents Cup when it is held in South Africa next year,' said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.
Honorary chairmen of the previous Presidents Cup matches have been U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford in 1994, George Bush in 1996 and Bill Clinton in 2000. Australian Prime Minister John Howard was the honorary chairman during the 1998 matches in Australia.
Last week, the PGA Tour announced that Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player would serve as captains for the U.S. and International teams in 2002.
