In a press conference to promote the Buick Open, which will be contested June 28-Jul. 1, Woods said that impending fatherhood might cause him to miss his title defense.
The tournament is kind of up in the air for me but I intend on playing, Woods said Monday. I'm really looking forward to coming back.
Woods wife, Elin, is expecting their first child this summer, which has put Tigers playing schedule in doubt.
Our child will be our No. 1 priority, he said. Golf will be secondary.
Last year's Buick Open was held two weeks before the PGA Championship. Woods claimed the title for the second time (2002). It also marked his 50th career PGA TOUR victory and was the second of his seven consecutive TOUR wins from 2006-07.
One event Tiger seemed certain on playing was next weeks Memorial Tournament. The three-time Memorial champion will use the event as his lone tune-up for the U.S. Open two weeks thereafter.
Before he picks up his clubs again for competition, however, he plans on having a bit of fun.
I got to go out to Vegas this weekend for my concert (Tiger Jam). I'm hosting Bon Jovi this year as well as Hootie and the Blowfish on Friday. We've got some pretty exciting things. Then off to Memorial, then the U.S. Open, he said.
Woods has already had one look at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., site of this years U.S. Open. But, he said, he would love to get another crack at it before Open week arrives.
When I played it, I had never seen it before in person. I just remember from the old highlights of it being tree-lined, these big, big beautiful trees there. Well, that's gone. Now it's more like a links, inland links. That's basically how it was originally designed. It changed in the '50s. Now it's back to its original design, he said, adding, When I played it, it had snow the week before, so they were just coming out of their winter, late spring. The greens were not quite up to speed. The rough wasn't quite up yet. The golf course was still playing pretty difficult. I would like to take another look before I play the Open.
