PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A massive storm that engulfed all of north Florida dumped nearly an inch of rain on TPC Sawgrass, to say nothing of pea-sized hail, and packed 40 mph winds finally moved through the area. Round 3 was scheduled to restart at 5:30 p.m. ET.
The storm halted play at 1:02 p.m., almost two hours before front-runner David Toms was scheduled to tee off, and officials plan to play until dark on Saturday, complete the third round Sunday morning and send players back out off of both the first and 10th tees in hopes of completing the PGA Tour’s marquee event on time.
The last Monday finish at The Players was in 2005, two years before the event’s move from March to May. Officials said Saturday ticket holders will be allowed to use their passes on Sunday.
A large pine tree had fallen adjacent the 16th fairway but crews already had most of it cleared away.
