A cut above at only 14
Thompson is even par through 28 holes and is only two strokes off the pace set by Lorena Ochoa, Cristie Kerr and Jean Reynolds. All three of those players tee off this afternoon. First-round leader Na Yeon Choi is 2 over on the day through eight holes and 1 under par for the tournament. She bogeyed her first two holes before steadying the ship with six straight pars.
Thompson, who’s made a habit of qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open (this is her third appearance), is vying to make the cut for the first time.
“The first year (2007 at Pine Needles), I was pretty nervous,” said Thompson after Thursday’s opening-round 71. “I was probably nervous on every shot. This year, I’m really determined and I know I can contend if my game is on.”
