PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Some practice rounds are more lively than others. The Wednesday four-ball of Lucas Glover, Johnson Wagner, Brandon de Jonge and Jimmy Walker was an example of the “more lively” variety.
As the group approached the famed 17th hole Glover, just three days removed from his third PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow, posed the question: “The 17th, good hole?”
“Great hole,” Johnson quickly responded. “You’ve got to hit a shot under pressure and everyone has to play it.”
And so the debate continued until a new topic was offered – best currently active athlete?
“Labron James,” Glover said. “Other than golf, he could have been a star in any sport.”
The only thing not up for debate was how the group’s caddies would handle the annual looper challenge on the island hole. Asked how his man Don Cooper has done on the 17th in recent years Glover didn’t look up, “Water, water, water, water . . .”
For the record, “Coop” continued the trend in 2011 – pulling his tee shot left in the murky pond.
