RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Sandra Gal isn’t eligible to play for the European Solheim Cup team later this year, but that doesn’t mean she won’t end up playing against the Americans at Killeen Castle in Ireland Sept. 23-25.
“I can’t wait to be a part of the team,” Gal said after taking the early lead Thursday at Kraft Nabisco Championship. “But that’s up to a committee of the LET [Ladies European Tour].”
Gal, a German, isn’t eligible because she’s not a member of the LET, but European Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas huddled with Gal Wednesday at the Kraft Nabisco. Gal is an LPGA member and won the Kia Classic last weekend.
Jan Gal, Sandra’s father, told GolfChannel.com that Nicholas detailed an opening that might allow Sandra to make the European team.
“Alison Nicholas said she couldn’t promise anything, but there could be a way,” Jan said.
Nicholas told Sandra that there’s a bylaw that allows the Ladies European Tour to award tour membership for “special achievement.” That would allow Gal to make the team as a captain’s pick and possibly off the points list, though that was less certain. Jan Gal said the family’s hopeful Gal’s LPGA victory at the Kia Classic last weekend would qualify as a “special achievement.”
“It’s not up to me,” Sandra Gal said. “We’ll see what happens.”
