Zach Johnson stayed red-hot Thursday in the California desert, firing a bogey-free 65 to sit just two shots off the lead at the Humana Challenge.
Johnson, who has three wins in his last seven starts, including the 2014 opener at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, made seven birdies at La Quinta Country Club, one of three courses used in the event rotation. At 7 under, he is two shots behind first-round leader Patrick Reed.
Johnson seized the early lead by going 5 under through 10 holes, then tacked on birdies at the par-5 13th and par-4 finishing hole.
This is Johnson’s fourth career start at the Humana. He finished T-23 and T-8 in 2013 and 2012, respectively.
After the win at Kapalua, Johnson shot four rounds in the 60s and tied for eighth at the Sony Open. He has 10 top-8 finishes in his last 13 starts, and he is 107 under par during his last 37 rounds.
