Lexi Thompson took some special inspiration to the first tee Thursday in her domestic LPGA rookie debut at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup.
Thompson, 17, played golf with Jack Nicklaus at the prestigious Seminole Golf Club Pro-Member in South Floridalast week.
Thompson got a special word of encouragement from the Golden Bear that she wont soon forget after a couple of long drives.
I heard him say, wow, Thompson said. That was pretty nice.
Thompson relished playing alongsidethe 72-year-old icon.
He can still hit it pretty good, Thompson said. He outdrove me on one hole.
Thompson got to chat at more length withNicklaus in the clubhouse after the round.
He said if I ever need any help, hes a phone call away, Thompson said. It was so much fun. I would love to play with him again.
Thompson played with Nicklaus and former world No. 1 Greg Norman within a weeks time. She played alongside Norman in the Honda Classic Pro-Am.
It was the best week ever, Thompson said.
Golf will see ifthe Nicklaus advice factor takes hold againthis week, or perhaps in two weeks atthe years first major championship, the Kraft Nabisco. Nicklaus met with Jessica Korda over the winter, and she won the LPGA season opener in her first start after that. Charl Schwartzel and Trevor Immelman each won theMasters after seeking Nicklaus advice. Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open after doing so.
