In a meeting of the PGA Tour Policy Board this week, the nine-member body is expected to approve a wraparound schedule to start in fall 2013 to start the ’14 season.
The 2014 season would begin the prior October with the Frys.com Open which, under the proposal, would fall under the FedEx Cup umbrella for the first time. The events played prior to January would offer half the FedEx Cup points compared to their calendar-year counterparts.
Officials with the Frys.com Open have expressed their displeasure with the proposal in a formal letter to the PGA Tour, according to Golf World Monday. The letter says the electronics retailer questions its future sponsorship of the San Jose event, which expires in 2016.
“If our tournament is not accepted on a level playing field with most of the others, we will have concern about continuing our sponsorship with the PGA Tour,' the letter says in part.
The 16-person Player Advisory Council has already approved the measure. The change is considered essential to keep Fall Series events on the schedule, as well as provide a logical start to the Tour calendar after the conclusion of the FedEx Cup playoffs and a proposed concurrent three-event series blending PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour players for 50 PGA Tour cards.
