NORTON, Mass. – Ernie Els continues to scratch his way toward East Lake and the playoff-ending Tour Championship. On Saturday at the Deutsche Bank Championship, the Big Easy needed just 28 putts on his way to a second-round 65 and a spot atop the 36-hole leaderboard.
For Els, TPC Boston is the ultimate elimination tournament. He began the playoffs 119th in FedEx Cup points, tied for 32nd at The Barclays to narrowly advance to Boston at 99th in points and likely needs to stay inside the top 10 to keep his run going to Chicago in two weeks.
The ultimate stop, however, is the Tour Championship, which Els has missed just twice since 1994 (’98 and ’05).
“There's pressure, and this is maybe something that I needed,” he said. “If you don't really well play, you don't advance. That's probably what I needed to get my game back in shape.”
