By nip/tucking a string of three consecutive Texas events, the PGA Tour had hoped to give fields that sometimes suffer from the post-Players, pre-U.S. Open lull a marquee boost. The biggest winner from the circuit’s new Texas swing will probably be the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Next week’s field has eight of the top 10 players in the world ranking, including Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 9 – Geoff Ogilvy, Kenny Perry, Paul Casey and Vijay Singh.
“We benefitted greatly (from the move),” tournament director Peter Ripa said. “Our date also falls into a nice slot just before the Memorial which a lot of guys will play. We feel our traditional golf course now at 7,204 yards and par 70 playing hard and fast is a great prep for the U.S. Open.”
The quality of an event’s golf course may be every player’s litmus test for playing certain events, but a friendly schedule certainly makes things easier.
