CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The logistics of living less than a mile from the feared “Green Mile” at Quail Hollow Club is a variable not lost on 54-hole frontrunner Webb Simpson.
Knowing the course has definitely helped,” he said in what can only be interpreted as a gross understatement.
The Simpsons have lived in the Charlotte area for a year and a half and Simpson, a stroke clear of the field at 14 under following a third-round 69, has played close to 100 rounds on the layout. But if he wasn’t reading too much into his local knowledge advantage, his caddie Paul Tesori has seen enough this week to acknowledge the obvious.
Like on No. 11, he’s like, ‘Paul, I have to take that tree on down the left. I’ve hit it in that tree a bunch of times and it’s never bounced back at me,’” Tesori said. “At No. 1 he likes to hit a little low cut driver down there and he surprised me at the 12th, (saying) ‘Paul I’m trying to hit a low cut down the left because anything down the right is dead.’”
