MELBOURNE, Australia – The golf world wanted Tiger Woods vs. Adam Scott and Presidents Cup captains Fred Couples and Greg Norman were more than willing to accommodate.
The two captains unveiled their teams for Thursday’s opening foursomes session that featured Woods and expected partner Steve Stricker heading out in the anchor group against Adam Scott and K.J. Choi.
Many had speculated that Scott – whose caddie Stevie Williams caused a firestorm three weeks ago with a racial slur directed at his former boss Woods – would play Woods and the two captains figured it was best to get it out of the way early.
“It’s great for the tournament,” Norman said. “It needed to be done and it played out the way it played out. There was no premeditation.”
Thursday’s first five matches will feature rookies Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson playing Ryo Ishikawa and Ernie Els; Bill Haas and Nick Watney against Geoff Ogilvy and Charl Schwartzel; Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar playing Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day; Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk against Retief Goosen and Robert Allenby; and Hunter Mahan with David Toms versus K.T. Kim and Y.E. Yang.
