Time off not a good thing
Count Troy Matteson among those eliminated Monday from the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Matteson entered the final round 83rd in points but his 1-under-par 70 couldn’t bust him inside the top 70 to advance to this week’s BMW Championship. He probably needed two or three more birdies to advance.
“It’s disappointing when you are so close to getting into next week,” Matteson said. “Having three weeks off to play and practice is going to be weird.”
Matteson’s position shows the oddity of the FedEx Cup format. Though he entered the week 83rd in points, he was 134th in money winnings. He has some work to do in the Fall Series to secure his exempt status among the top 125 in money.
