ORLANDO, Fla. – Bubba Watson was posed with a seemingly easy question Wednesday, on the eve of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The long-bombing, shotmaking lefty was asked to name the five best American players on the PGA Tour. Nick Watney and Matt Kuchar immediately came to mind. Dustin Johnson’s name came next. The fourth was Hunter Mahan but Watson had difficulty coming up with a fifth. Ultimately, he went with Mark Wilson because he’s the only American who has won twice this year.
Watson didn’t think to put himself in the group, but, when told of the omission said, “OK, I’ll put myself sixth.”
Whether Watson was playing coy or not, he’s proved this year that he belongs amongst the game’s elite. A victory at the Farmers Insurance Open, a fourth-place finish at the Accenture Match Play Championship and another solid performance at Bay Hill are proof that he’s no flash in the pan for the red, white and blue.
