Michelle Wie and Natalie Gulbis, two of the biggest attractions in women’s golf, won’t be teeing it up at the U.S. Women’s Open July 9-12 at Saucon Valley Country Club's Old Course in Bethlehem, Pa.
Thirty players in a field of 111 advanced from the sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., on Monday, but Wie and Gulbis weren’t among them.
Wie missed by a shot with rounds of 71 and 74, Gulbis by two with a 75 and 71.
According to a Washington Post report, Wie hurried away and did not comment after learning she failed to advance. She made six bogeys over her final nine, including four in a row.
Wie and Gulbis were not among 70 players exempt from qualifying. One way they could have earned such status was by being among the LPGA’s top 50 money winners last year or among the top 10 on this year's money list on June 1. Wie is a rookie this year. Wie and Gulbis both dealt with the effects of injuries last season.
