2007 Solheim Cup Venue Announced
Earlier this year, the LET announced The Solheim Cup will be returning to Sweden in 2007 after the immense success of the matches in 2003, held at Barsebck Golf & Country Club where almost 100,000 spectators lined the fairways to witness an historic European victory.
The dates of the 2007 matches will be announced in due course.
Halmstad Golf Club, which has been repeatedly voted the finest course in Sweden and was awarded the number two venue outside the UK by Britains Golf World magazine, held off excellent bids from both Barsebck Golf & Country Club near Malm and Vidbyns GC in Stockholm.
The Ladies European Tour has visited Halmstad Golf Club twice with European Solheim Cup players emerging victorious on each occasion. In 1999, Englands Laura Davies won the Chrysler Open by an eight shot margin and in 2000 Carin Koch from Sweden delighted her home fans with her maiden professional victory.
It was an extremely difficult decision to choose from three excellent golf courses, all of which would have provided the perfect venue for an event of this magnitude, said Ian Randell, chief executive of the Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour.
Building upon the successes of Barsebck Golf & Country Club in 2003, we are delighted to be able to visit another of the finest courses in Sweden in 2007. We have had excellent support from the local communities in each proposal, but the fact that the town of Halmstad will be celebrating their 700th anniversary added further strength to their bid.
Bengt Ekberg, Chairman of the Halmstad City Council was delighted to add:
Halmstad Municipality in cooperation with Halmstad Golf Club are proud to announce the hosting of The Solheim Cup 2007. This is a very eventful time for Halmstad considering that The Solheim Cup 2007 will take place during the citys 700 year celebration.
Stefan gren, President of Halmstad Golf Club continued:
We are very honoured and happy to be chosen as the venue for the 2007 Solheim Cup. I am convinced that everyone at Halmstad Golf Club will do their utmost to make the 2007 Solheim Cup a huge success...Welcome!
The Swedish Golf Federation (SGF) will once again be the official Host and will be joined by the Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic Federations who will each take the status of Co-Host. This will ensure the event will be strongly marketed throughout the Nordic Region and will contribute heavily to the development of the Ladies European Tour and womens golf in general.
The Solheim Cup 2007 will also be the culmination of a three year womens golf programme in the Nordic region with the Volvo Cross Country Challenge and the LET has agreed that the Federations will become involved in individual LET tournaments to be played between 2005 and 2007.
Speaking on behalf of the Solheim family and PING, the sponsors of The Solheim Cup, John A. Solheim, Chairman and CEO of PING said:
It will be thrilling to have The Solheim Cup played at Halmstad Golf Club, rated number two in Europe. With the venue coupled with the tremendous support of the Swedish and Scandinavian people, the 2007 Solheim Cup will be a very exciting event.
