GolfChannel.com Senior Writer Rex Hoggard is in Marana, Arizona this week to cover the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. When asked about the back and forth between Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Tiger Woods, Rex said that it showed what kind of guy Gonzalo is. He knew immediately that anything he said about Tiger would be publicized heavily. He thinks that Tiger used Ames’ comments as motivation in 2006 but he is not so sure that Gonzalo’s comments will have the same impact in 2012.
Tiger is an incredible match play competitor but he has a love/hate relationship with this event. He has won three times but he has also lost in the first round twice which shows the nature of match play. A few years ago, Tiger Woods said that the biggest accomplishment of his career was the three straight U.S. Junior Amateur titles. He seems to like the 36-hole final match better than the 18-hole format because it is, to him, a fuller test of golf and gives a player time to recover from a slow start.
This week, Steve Stricker has once again given Tiger some putting tips during a practice round. Stricker did the same thing during the Presidents Cup in Australia and the tips had a positive impact that week. At first look, one would not think that Stricker and Woods have much in common but they seem to on the greens.
