The 56-year-old Semple Thompson, who won this event four straight years from 1999-2002, moved on with a 6 and 4 rout of Barbara Pagana.
'I played well,' Semple Thompson said after dispatching her opponent, who had defeated three women in a morning playoff for the final spot in the 64-player field.
'I'm feeling more comfortable putting on these greens, although I think they are going to change as the week progresses,' she added.
Creekmore, 53, dispatched Marianne Springer 3 and 1 to win her match, and later explained how she preferred her play Monday to what he had done over the weekend.
'The Creekie came back today,' Creekmore said. 'I didn't play very well in the stroke-play rounds, but today I hit the ball well and sunk some long putts.'
Two other past champions were ousted in the first round of match play: Jean Smith, the 1995 winner, and four-time USGA champion Marlene Streit.
The 63-year-old Smith was on the losing end of a 2 and 1 decision in her match against Nancy Smith, while the 71-year-old Streit ended 2-down against Alison Reifers, who is 21 years her junior.
'To play with an amateur competitor of Marlene's stature was a thrill for me,' acknowledged Reifers. 'She never let up on me and I had a tough time closing her out.'
