Couples will be making his record 11th appearance while Woods is competing in his fifth.
Last year, in one of the most thrilling Skins Games, Couples outlasted first-time player Sorenstam, Phil Mickelson and Mark OMeara to capture his record-setting fourth Skins Game title.
After the final hole was halved, all four players returned to the 18th tee, and all made par. On the second extra hole, the 17th, Couples and Mickelson made birdie while Sorenstam and OMeara bowed out with par. After both players once again made birdie on the third extra hole (18th), Couples made birdie on the 17th to win the final $200,000 available and capture the event.
OMeara and Mickelson both had chances to win the event on the first extra hole, however OMeara missed a birdie putt from six feet and Mickelson a four-footer.
Couples returned to the winners circle at this tournament for the first time since 1999 and increased his overall Skins Game lead in earnings ($2,875,000) and in Skins (66).
With his win, Couples moved one win ahead of Payne Stewart on the all-time victory list at this event. Stewart won three consecutive Skins Games from 1991-93.
After four years at Landmark Golf Club, the event moved to Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta last year. The first two Skins Games were held at Desert Highlands in Arizona followed by a one-year stint at Bear Creek Golf Club in California. The TPC at PGA West played host from 1986-91 while Bighorn Golf Club hosted the event from 1992-95. Rancho La Quinta Country Club was the tournament venue from 1996-98.
The first nine holes will be played on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (et) and the final nine holes will be played on Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m. (et).
Tom Watson won the first skin in the history of the Skins Game back in 1983. Lee Trevino is the only player to have ever recorded a hole-in-one in the history of The Skins Game, getting his ace in 1987 on the 17th hole at PGA West (Stadium Course).
Each player will donate 20-percent of his or hers Skins Game earnings to their favorite charity.
