The WGC in Akron is tourists delight
During Thursday’s opening round only a few holes (Nos. 9, 17 and 18) were completely lined with fans and there was plenty of open seating throughout the round. Akron is a quiet corner of Northwest Ohio and most fans from Cleveland, which is about an hour away, wait for the weekend to attend.
“We hear that a lot,” smiled Don Padgett III, the tournament’s executive director. “It is a great place to see all the top players and the course is an easy walk.”
Our pitch for the perfect golf outing – 18 holes on the adjacent North Course (which most members prefer over the South), a stress-free loop following (and actually seeing) Woods topped off with an Akron Aeros game played at what may be the minor league’s second-best stadium behind the new Durham Bulls field.
