Founded in 1892, Athlone Golf Club is one of Ireland's longest established golf clubs. The course once sprawled across the rolling hills of the Batteries before moving to Garnafailagh in 1920. In its current location, Lough Ree encloses the course on three sides, providing scenic views. In 2003, the golf course underwent major renovations including redesign of the sand-based greens, the addition of new water features, and an enhanced par-3 sixth hole. Golfers are immediately thrown into the course's challenges with the opening hole, which plays from an elevated tee to a fairway lined on both sides by trees. Athlone Golf Club's par-5 12th hole is the most memorable though. It is a classic risk-reward hole that features a blind tee shot over a hill into a valley, where you then have a blind approach to a green protected by a sand bunker on the left and a grass bunker on the right. A portion of the golf course is located on the Esker Riada, encouraging better drainage, which makes Athlone G.C. ideal in the winter.
