And really a special event up in Portland, Oregon and the local kid who grew up there who has now been a rockstar for a long time and a member of Kiss, Tommy Thayer is gonna host the event. It's the 2011 Pacific University Legends Golf Classic and Tommy joins us via telephone. Tommy, thank you very much for coming on. Let's start off first, tell me about this event that you have in your old hometown. -Hey guys, how are you doing? -Great. -Yeah, I grew up in Portland, Oregon. I've lived in Southern California for, you know, many years now, you know in the music business obviously. But there's a college in Portland Pacific University that about 5 years ago asked me to be on their Board of Trustees, you know which is the governing board for the University which is something- I was just got blown away that they asked me, because you know rock-and-roll guy on a board of a college, it's interesting. But, I thought it was kinda so interesting that I said this is something I have to do. So anyway, they nominated me for the board and not long after, the Athletics Director asked me if I'd be interested in hosting a golf tournament or some sort of an event for them to you know raise funds and things for the athletics program. And I said, of course, I said, but the only condition is that if we do it, I wanna make it purely world class event, you know something that's big that you know really makes a mark up there. So that's what we ended up doing and 5 years ago, there our first one and you know it was gang busters and it's just built from there. So of course, this year, our fifth year-end of 2011 now, the event is this weekend which is Sunday, July 31st and Monday, August 1st. And you know we have a huge party up there, big concert party with an auction Sunday night at the Tiger Woods Center at the Nike World Campus in Beaverton. And then Monday, we have the golf tournament, but the party is almost the bigger event because of, you know all the people that show up, the celebrities and the musicians and you know, we have a big time. -Well, Tommy, you're making it even bigger because our Holly Saunders, you mentioned that big party. She's gonna be emceeing that which we're really proud of her. She's going out to Portland. She's very excited. Golf entertainers that go hand in hand, particularly rockers, you guys have time during the day. You perform at night. When did you get turned on to golf? -Well, you know I played golf all my life. As a kid, my dad took me out- you know my dad wasn't a great golfer, either but we just went out and had fun. So but in the last 5 or 10 years, I've probably learned how to you know play, you know more seriously and try to figure my swing out and all that sort of thing and playing tournaments and host tournaments and things like that. For the last 5 or 10 years, it's been you know more of a serious thing, something that I've really paid more attention to for sure. And I wanted to add, we're so thrilled that the lovely Holly Saunders will be emceeing our event. I haven't met her yet. I've watched you guys' show a lot and you know I think it's great. And I thought, you know she'd really be great if she came up and emceed our deal, you know and so we're looking forward to that. -Who's the best golfer among all the rockstars that you know or have played with. -I think this is question, you probably could have guessed, but it's probably Alice Cooper. And there might be somebody else, but you know that Alice immediately comes to mind. You know, he's been playing for a long time and I believed he plays almost every day even when he's on the road touring. So as you know, you know practice makes perfect and you know if you play more, if you play 3, 4, 5 times a week, you know you're gonna get a lot better than the guy that just plays once every a couple of weeks. So, I'd Say Alice and he's a great guy and we're good friends and-- -Yeah, well, you know what? I don't know if I buy it, Darius Rucker plays every single day almost. -And you got to help him out. I mean, he's my guy and all, but he's playing a lot practices making sort of perfect with them. -But, you know I played with Darius before and as a matter of fact Darius is coming to the event this weekend. Also, he's a friend and you know obviously a great musician, but you know Darius is a great golfer, too. I think that would be a tossup between Darius and Alice though. -Well, here's the thing Tommy. Earlier this year, Darius is playing at Pebble Beach and he hit a sniper to the left right off the tee and almost really took somebody's head off. You know this 'cause you're playing a lot of celebrity events. It's amazing what happens to the amateur golfer when they see ropes. And they see people lining fairway and seriously, don't it get your mind? -Oh yeah. A lot of dangerous things gonna happen with those things with some of us. You know, I have to say, you know I played a lot of big places, you know professionally as a musician and yes we played huge cuts of hundreds of thousands of people, but you know, when you walk up to that first tee at the Bob Hope or that sort of thing, and there's about 500 people sitting there, including a lot of PGA Tour players and you know other celebrity golfers and things. I've never been so freaking nervous in my life. I was shaking and that's a tough deal 'cause you walk up there and suddenly, you know joining us this year at the Bob Hope Classic is the lead guitarist Tommy Thayer from Kiss. Okay, Tommy. Show us what you got, you know. You walk up there and suddenly gets very quiet, you know and it was the most nerve-wracking thing I've ever experienced. -Let's finish up with this, your favorite golf course and your favorite arena to play in. -Well, 2 favorite golf courses, Augusta National which I had the opportunity to play last year which was amazing, just going out there. We were guests of the, you know one of the members there, Doc McGee, our manager and myself. And it was just a fabulous day. We actually spent the night before at the Butler Cabin which is like, you know a bonus and yeah the whole thing was mind-blowing. And also, you know one of my favorite course is actually East Lake in Atlanta. It's big as the history and I'm gonna be out there. Billy Andrade had invited me to play in his and Stewart Cink's. They have a charity deal they're doing in another month from now and I'm gonna be out playing a nap, but you know that's one of my favorite courses, too. -And Eric asked you about the arena, do you have a favorite joint? It might be small, it might be large that is your old time favorite to play? -You know, that's a tough one. You know, usually comes more down to the great crowds and you know how exciting and you know the energy is between us and the audience which you know really drives it. But, you know there's so many great places, I mean we played in Australia. We played all around the world, actually, you know just as very global and you know we've done South America stadiums and you know huge shows in Europe and except the poles and you know it's hard to say, but you know some great ones where in Australia we played the Telstra Dome which is a huge dome in Melbourne, Australia. And you know packed it out and that was a huge. Great, great times. -Well, we certainly appreciate another man who makes his living wearing make-up as the 2 of us do. So, thank you. -I love that. More make-up than most women for sure. -Absolutely. Nobody realizes it. But we appreciate the time. Have a great event. Hope you'll take good care of Holly and I'm sure she'll come back and give us all the good stories. -Yeah. -But any man- -Yeah, we'll show Holly a good time out there and I'm just thrilled that she's coming and then we'd like to get you guys up there on one of the, you know upcoming you know years that we do this. But the Pacific Legends Golf Classic hosted by yours truly and then the people can check it out, the information www.pacificlegendsgolf.com <http://www.pacificlegendsgolf.com>. And I think we're sold out this year which is also great. So, we're looking forward to it and we really appreciate you guys' you know help on this. -No, it's not often we get to talk to a rockstar/golfer who's on the Board of Trustees for a college. And it's one guy who steps up. -Very bizarre, one person. Yeah. -God bless you and will talk to you soon. -Thanks Tommy. -All right, guys. Thanks so much.
