TRANSCRIPTS

-When this whole process started, the objective was to be here...

-When this whole process started, the objective was to be here on the last day and that goal has been accomplished. -You know it'd probably a lot people might not think I've got what it takes but you know I'm not interested in what they've got to say. I know I can do it. -Two men have reached the final match. Only one will be crowned champion of the Big Break IV. -Between Guy and I, I'm definitely sharper than he is right now. I will be very, very tough to bet. -He really wants this. He's very hungry and he's not thinking much of ways so I know we'll have to have my A game. -There's only 1 more goal and that's to hold the Big Break IV trophy at the end of the day. -Certainly nothing Paul does is gonna go out with me. All I'm focusing on right now is trying to win. -It's Guy versus Paul, one match, one champion on the Big Break IV USA versus Europe. -Stephanie, we've been blessed with another brilliant day here at Carnoustie. -We really are. We actually looked out. I think this is hard competition. It hasn't been too bad. -This was not together. I could travel right down the first you know this. I think down the fairway so get a good solid strike and a good swing. -That was a pleasant surprise to know that the team was invited back and that they were gonna be there for the match. -Gentlemen, 18 holes of match play. I'll make sure you country clubs identify your golf balls from one another. If you need to make a concession or decide making concession at anytime, please make it loud enough so that myself and the opponent can hear it. Good luck to you both. Anything I can do to help you let me know. -No one's really been put under any sort of amount of pressure yet. It's been on here, I'll said I have to play well to have a challenge. -You know this started out as USA versus Europe. I get nervous thinking about it that you're actually playing for your country. That's an overwhelming responsibility and task. -Hang on. -Go. -Pretty good. -Good drive. -Well done. -Great drive, Paul. -Thank you. -A wonderful start to start the match. -He hit great driver right down the middle so you know you expect that from him. I went with my 3-wood. -Good shot, Guy. -Thanks. -Good shot, Guy. -It's interesting you know Guy hit 3-wood. -You know we're both hoping that we play well and that somebody wins it rather than being given to somebody. -From Carnoustie to the confines of our studio here in Orlando, we welcome you, the Sprint post-game gang along for the ride, the finale of Big Break IV Kraig Kann joined by the gentle Brian Hewitt, Frank Nobilo here as well for some insights and analysis. I wanna let you know we have not seen this finale just like you. We're watching it for the very first time so we wait and we see how this thing plays out. Guys, we're gonna get some perspective from you. Guy and Paul Holtby, Guy Woodman and Paul Holtby, actually you should probably be you know favoring or fancying Paul. He kind of looks like you. -Well, that's actually Guy. I think Paul needs a shave first of all but I actually know Guy. I mean I know the golf course. I played there in the British Open in '99 but to date myself Guy actually was the standard bearer when I was playing the European Open. I'm gonna say 15, 17 years ago. So I sort of got you know a little favoritism towards Guy but Paul, I mean he's kind of got the beard. He's got the gamesmanship as well really. -You're the player. You're the media guy in this whole thing. I wanna get a pressroom feel as if you were at Carnoustie analyzing this thing. -Well early on here I'm thinking of this US versus Europe angle and gosh if the New York Post was there, I just can't imagine what the headlines might be and maybe we'll think of a couple as we go along. -Yes, playing for their country, for their continent. This thing is big and again we're gonna watch it with you along the way. We'll be back for more analysis. We head to a break. Back to continue hole number 1 right after this, the Big Break IV finale. Enjoy. -That's a lot of talent. -It's great to catch up with such a great country guys and it was quite a comfort having them there, walking around so it made me feel good. -Plus hit really good drives for the amount of pressure what's on the line and that kind of stuff. See what happens. -I've got a guy on it. -That went right on it. You can't tell from this angle but he couldn't have a better line. -I don't think there have been. That's when it count short but you know it's go after those 2 shots to start with calming us down for a moment. -I knew he's probably at least 40, 50 feet from the hole. Wow what a great opportunity. I'd 127 to the hole. I was into the wind and it gave me the opportunity to make a good aggressive swing at it. -Yes, give it a good shot. -I had about a 20 footer to start the match off and I knew that he had a tough, tough putt for birdie. -Because I feel the match play competition to have the first hole in is kind of-- it's not a big advantage but mentally it is a big advantage. -Kind of what's left in this here. -It left for us to start with. -Down here right there. -The fairways are so good and the fringe is unbelievable. I mean there's good as most greens in most places and so that's why my decision to use putts was that much easier. -He's gotta go. He's gotta go. One thing about putting off the green like that is you gotta give it a good effort to get the ball in the hole. -Really like about Paul's game is in his previous match is he always puts himself in position to make birdie. -Really my thought was don't wait for him to make or miss. Make this thing and that's to send the message. -Look at this. -Oh boy. -What a great putt. -Good roll, cap. -What a great putt. And now there are 4 footers even longer for Guy to answer par. -The 4 feet, 1st hole, nerves, you just don't know. -It's one of those ones that you feel you gotta make because it could set a trend for the day and you actually get it done to give him the first hole. I mean just get that away and you wanna know that you're there to play. -Alright, Guy. -Hole 1, Paul 4, Guy 4. Match is all square, 17 holes remaining to be played. -So leave yourself a sort of 4 or 5 foot to save par in the 1st hole it's always-- you know it's something that I do but if you knock it in it sets the pace for us around. -I had a great opportunity to again just rip it right down the middle and start this heat going but I end up in the left weeds. -So a very straight drive, maybe we'll see after that from Captain Paul. -Good job. -How about that swing. -Great drive. -Good job, Guy. -Great drive. -It's one of the most confident swings we've seen here from him. -Wonderful placement on this hole. -Guy, it looks like he's gonna be tough to beat but we're still rooting for Paul and Paul's got a lot of experience. It's gonna be really exciting though. -I'm sitting in some pretty good weeds but the ball was sitting up a little bit but again it's those little tall wiry little things that you just don't know what it's gonna do to the golf club. -Get down, Paul. -Yes. -Big running that play. -Oh great shot. -Terrific shot. -Thank you. -You know he absolutely muscled that out of there. -I have 137 and out 70, slide me into and I just thought well you know it's gonna be firm by the front of the green, travel down the front edge and let it run up. -Oh. -Right on it. -Oh, great shot. -Great shot, Guy. This is gonna be a match. -Wow. -It was deceiving from the fairway because it actually looked like he was maybe 25 feet below the hole but he ended up being a good probably 45, 50 feet. -Showing some point left to right. -Yes. -And I know just what bunker we sunk it then. -Yes. -It looked like it was gonna break a little bit from the right but not much. It wasn't a lot as well as I cut the pace. That's the key. -Get in the hole. Get in the hole. -Wow. -Look at that grin. -I'll tell you what? -Look at that grin. -I just can't believe thinking turning and drop, you know. It looked good all the way. It looked like it should turn left and it just didn't. -I had a 15-footer. I was focused on if you know when I make this, I don't have to again hope for a gift. That is our right earning. -Oh. -That's okay, Paul. -See it. -Bunker break. -You gotta make all those putts in match play you know. You can't afford just giving anything away because you know someone like Paul, he's not have any too many mistakes. -Well done, Guy. -Good job, mate. -He hit it inside me twice now. I've come out with half so you know that was good and probably frustrating a little bit. -And it was running Paul and for Guy to hold that putt. That's a 2nd putt on the 1st hole and the thing is gonna be a good match. -This was an opportunity to go 1-up. Take the guy out of his game plan but to lead on him. -Complete contestant bios, exclusive video, and Big Break merchandise are available online at the GolfChannel.com. -Yes. We're now number 3. This is actually the shortest par 4 on the course. There are sand dunes that run along the right and you'll see a couple of bunkers in the middle of the fairway that the players will have to avoid. -Driving it good, my irons are sharp. My distance control is good. I'm rolling it good. I'm rolling it on line. You know at this point I'm feeling really good about my game. -Good, Paul. -Good shot. -Good shot. -Alright. -I'm sure he didn't it that he want it to. Like he was aiming left to the bunkers and things started right and start cutting but ends up in a great spot. I mean if he meant it that shot that was good if you take them out to a couple of ones habitually. -No way. Not deep down. -I tried to go more down the left hand side straight from the green up. -Beautiful strike. -Good. -He left with an iron. -That wind's blowing it back. -And I hit 3-iron there. I didn't start particularly good but a good line and you know people what I needed to do in the fairway. -It's one thing to hang on and hope that the other guy screws up but you can't wait for that to happen because you'll end up eating that. -If you wanna hit it closer than that, but since then, you need to put pressure on Paul. -What luck he tried he'll need a little point shot maybe out there any. -I always love the wedge game. I always feel like because that's one of my strong suits. -It's gonna get in. -Good shot -Get in. -Yes, a little bit. -Look at this shot. -Oh. -Look at this. -Oh. -Oh. -Great shot. -Outstanding. -Another birdie opportunity for him. -I knew just by how solid I hit it, it was gonna be closer. They said you know how close. -You know you're gonna make it probably to get a half is-- -Yes. -And Martin he says with us a very downfall. -Good shot. -What an epic. -That's good. -Paul's conceded par to Guy but Paul for the first birdie of this match and the early lead. -This was an opportunity to go 1-up and take the other guy out of his game plan, put some heat on him, make him start making some choices he wouldn't normally do. That's what you gotta do at match play. -Good shot. -Thank you. -Birdie for Paul Holtby. -Hole 3, Paul 3, Guy 4, Paul is 1-up with 15 holes remaining to be played. -I think Guy is happier with his game. He's hitting solid and hitting the ball well so he just needs to get close to 1 hole and get that 1 back. -Yes, that line. -He's gonna trust me walking around much of him. You know he's trying the ball-- he's very accurate and you know obviously you know deep down that you're gonna have to produce some good golf to beat him. -Good shot. -It's perfect. -Here's Paul. -Ugly. -It's gonna be even way to the rough. It would be alright. -This guy is gonna make a couple of adjustments. He's been leaving everything short whether it's adjustment in his ball flight or his club selection but he's gotta start doing something to get the ball to the green. -One of the big strategies that I did and what I usually do is I mapped out, I took out the yardage and then I map out the trade winds, then I mark where in the fairway I want my ball to end up. I had 170 front edge and I had 184 to the hole into the wind and I go I can't believe this is happening. You know I carry 16 clubs then I go like you know course setup based on what I'm gonna need and again tee all being very important so I left an extra fairway wood in the bag. -I learned to get out. -So after joking with Marty and he couldn't find my 5-iron I said you're not gonna find it, it's not in there I pulled it and right now the freaking club I needed. -Good shot, Paul. -With a 4-iron. -That's a great shot. -Yes, good shot. -So I'm gonna-- -Look at that shot. -Cute hell of a shot. -Great shot. -Guess I didn't need the 5. -No you did not. -Paul is executing the shots the way he wants to. For that Paul definitely has all the momentum right now so guys got the mix up and have him try to shift the momentum. -The last thing I wanna do is like hit a bad shot and miss the green and you know really take the pressure off. Just wanna give myself an opportunity, just put him under pressure. -Oh go. -Go. -Go. Go. -Go. -Just take a right and soft. -Go. -Good shot, Guy. -Pretty good. -Good shot. -He's not killing himself but at the same time he's not sharp. -He's a bit left to right. I don't know. -Yes. Pick up, let's go. -We might just remember we just don't mix a little bit. -Okay. -He's not gonna make too many mistakes and if we gotta try and stay with him and then just try to make birdie in there and make him think. -Well, must have pulled it off. -Paul taking a look at it. He'll probably tell him to pick it up. -Looks good. -Scared the hole there. -That's good. -Yes he does. -Good. -That surprises me. -I'm sitting there going you know let's get this in. Let's just go birdie birdie and just go 2-up after 4. -Hit it. -Oh man. -Look at [unk] -Paul 4, Guy 4, Paul remains 1-up with 14 holes remaining to be played. -I'm only 1-up after 4. You know that actually got into my head a little bit. -So through 4 holes, 1 up. Paul's favorite at this stage I wanna get some reaction. You know Paul is the alleged field player, conservative player. He took some notes based on his yardages and then he yanked his 5-iron right out of the bag, Frank. -Yes. I heard you know a player's pulling out a 2-iron, maybe a 4 but to actually pull out an iron like a 5-iron, I think actually he's gonna question that. There's no 2 ways about it because you know you're playing links golf, bump and run but I think on the flip side it looks like Paul is playing the golf course. When you watch Paul, he hits his shot and he looks at his book, he doesn't look at Guy. On the other side, Guy is very, very conscious of what Paul is doing and you know consequently as T.J. said he's coming up short all the time, he's playing the man, Paul's playing the golf course. -Interesting analysis. Your reaction. -Well if you want a headline on this right now-- -I do. -It would be all Paul. Everything seems to be going Paul's way. They've played 4 holes. The fact is though he's only 1-up and at a certain point in match play. I know it's early in this match. At a certain point everything is going your way and you're only 1-up, you begin to question well what am I gonna-- I mean it actually works in Guy's favor a little bit right now that he's only 1-down even though he's short on everything and as you say he was concentrating a little bit too much on the man and not the golf course. -We'll see if Guy changes his aggressiveness and tries to play a little more aggressively. When we come back we head to the 5th. Stay with us. -Wow. I really am way here in Hawaii. I'm treated like royalty and say hello to your own room. -Because you really don't know what's coming at you. -Well, it's so unknown. -We didn't know anything before coming out here. So-- -It seemed like it wasn't real. -I think we're gonna have a really great experience and that one shot at a time. -It's definitely the unknown. -You'll never know what's gonna happen, seriously. -Big Break V. It's real. -It's paradise here. Keep waiting to like pinch myself and wake up. -I'm at you know Turtle Bay and it's the North Shore. It is incredibly gorgeous. I've never seen so many shades of blue. -It's just sexy. It's a sexy place. -Welcome to Turtle Bay Resort. -Thank you so much. -Thank you. -Getting received by a lei, getting a kiss from the cheek. -Welcome to Turtle Bay. -Thank you. -Wow. This is real. Like I'm really gonna be on the Big Break. -This is the beginning. -Aloha. -Aloha. -And what a beautiful island morning it is. -If you've watched the other Big Breaks, you know there's gonna be some surprise. -Expect the unexpected, ladies. It starts now. -Oh. -I can't believe we're actually having to do that. -Well, there's some good resumes out here and these girls can play. -Hit it, hit it. -Oh, great shot. -Go in the hole. -Be good. -Oh. -Those odds are like a million to one. -Be your club, baby. Go. Go. Go. Yes. -So I go to the 5th tee and now we'll change directions and now we're going with the wind and I know if I just get something up in the air, it's gonna carry. -Go. -Nice shot. -I knew Paul would hit it right and it was at this stage we're starting to see a few chinks in his armory. -Paul, great swing. -Oh, nice shot. -Good swing. -Good swing, man. -Good job, man. -Yes. -I hit a great shot and when I get up there I'm totally hitting it down. It's gonna be one of the homes and breaks but I see else with the fairway into the ditch. -I wish Pauly just pick up. -I'll be right there for the last 10 years and not be a golfer and that ditch sure. I felt a little bit upset. I didn't have the 4-iron but I still think he was desperate and lucky to cut some great shots but that's links golf. -Because definitely we have our first serious misstep of the match and unfortunately Guy paid the price here. -Yes. He certainly did and you know Paul is not in a very good position himself in that right fairway bunker. -I ended up in the right bunker and ***CUT DICTATION***
